DESIGNING HEART SHAPED BOX

The task was to redesign a favorite book - inside and out - and deliver a final, bound limited edition.

Written by Joe Hill, son of famous horror author Stephen King, Heart Shaped Box is the dark tale of a cursed suit and it’s haunted owner. I picked this book to design because was an opportunity to design something ominous.

I art-directed a photo-shoot with photographer Bryan Anton to capture the cover image of the book’s iconic empty suit. I then paired the image with thin, glowing titles. In the book interior, I paired elegant Bodoni chapter-heads with transitional Baskerville, which is easily read, with a classic feel.

Designing the cover was just the beginning. I imported the original text into InDesign, proof-reading the copy, styling the body copy, chapter heads, headers, footers and layout.

MOODBOARD

After re-reading Heart Shaped Box, I created a moodboard of descriptors, textures and images I felt captured the mood of the novel.

DESIGNING THE INTERIOR

For the book interior, I designed Bodoni section heads, ornate Fette Fraktur chapter numbers, and transitional Baskerville for the body copy. The elegant thicks and thins of Bodoni paired nicely with the more classical (and readable) Baskerville.

THE FINAL book

The book was produced in an extremely limited edition of two. One book still sits in display at Seattle Central Creative Academy. The only other copy is on my shelf, awaiting an autograph from the author.
